Organizations looking to chart a new path often need an outside eye to help them see new ways of achieving their mission. We help our partners design that new path, leveraging organizational strengths, employee and community engagement, data, research, and content expertise. We are thoughtful and thorough and translate complex topics into easy-to-digest materials and actionable recommendations.

Policy & Practice

When organizations begin a new phase of their journey to becoming more equitable, they often don’t know where or how to begin. What policies should be in place? How might practices line up with policies? The temptation to invest in training staff is natural, but research indicates that it’s not effective when used in the absence of other strategies. We help organizations identify these other strategies.

We’re not afraid to lend a hand to help you do the real work of implementation. From 1 to 1 coaching for your leaders navigating organizational change, to designing and facilitating planning sessions and retreats, to developing communication tools that align with your strategy, we are ready to roll up our sleeves, partner, and add capacity to your organization.

  • Yes, this is a critical component of ensuring that your organization gives all communities equal access to opportunity. We love helping our partners with this work!

  • Our experience tells us that well-intended efforts to seek community input often fall short of meaningful, authentic engagement. We thoughtfully plan at least 4-6 month engagements to pair community engagement with other inputs including prior community engagement, research, data, and an analysis of how policies and practices have impacted communities. We often decline one-off engagements that are less than 6 months in favor of holistic strategies to think about the "big picture" needed to redesign and refine systems to make sure they work well for everyone, particularly those who have been traditionally underserved. We look for a readiness from our clients to integrate community engagement in ongoing processes and help you develop your organizational capacity to live up to that promise.

  • Yes! We have facilitated one-day retreats and we've also facilitated years-long learning communities. We prefer to work with clients who are clear on their intentions and desired outcomes for gathering people together, but we can also help you get clearer on what you hope to achieve.

  • It depends. We contract with public agencies and foundations as technical assistance providers to help potential grantees (community-based organizations) navigate complex grant requirements. In some cases, this means we help community-based organizations apply for grants from public agencies and foundations. We think of this work as building and sharing capacity to strengthen a broad network of organizations in our communities. If you're looking for hourly support to apply for a grant and have the details of the program you are seeking grants for already figured out, we won't be able to help you. We do support organizations with program design to help you figure out the details of what you should be applying for and how to effectively communicate it.

  • Yes, we are good at helping to translate your vision and goals into reality!

  • Public policy is our passion and we would love to help you with that, provided that you're open to incorporating the perspectives of those who have been typically left behind by the issue you want to address, and are committed to investing the time and resources for equitable process.

  • Absolutely! We start this type of work with doing an organizational assessment, including voices from employees and/or community members. If you'd like, we can translate promising practices relevant to your industry and organization into our project design and deliverables.
